Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Hunters' associations in rural areas of Nigeria often play an important role in supporting formal security forces by providing intelligence, protecting communities, and acting as a first line of defense against threats like banditry and armed robbery. In Jalingo LGA, Taraba State, where rural insecurity is a growing concern, the involvement of hunters' associations in community security is increasingly significant. This study will appraise the role of these associations in enhancing rural security and their collaboration with formal security agencies.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite their involvement in community security, the role of hunters' associations in rural security is often overlooked in formal security strategies. In Jalingo, while these associations are actively engaged in preventing crime, there is a lack of in-depth analysis of their effectiveness and the challenges they face. This study will evaluate their contributions to rural security and assess the need for greater institutional support.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the role of hunters' associations in ensuring rural security in Jalingo LGA.
To assess the effectiveness of collaboration between hunters' associations and formal security agencies.
To identify challenges faced by hunters' associations in providing security services to rural communities.
1.4 Research Questions
What role do hunters' associations play in enhancing rural security in Jalingo LGA?
How effective is the collaboration between hunters' associations and formal security agencies?
What challenges do hunters' associations face in their security efforts?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
H₀: Hunters' associations do not significantly contribute to rural security in Jalingo LGA.
H₁: Hunters' associations significantly contribute to rural security in Jalingo LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will shed light on the often-underappreciated role of hunters' associations in rural security. The findings will be useful for improving security policies and enhancing the collaboration between informal and formal security structures.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the role of hunters' associations in rural security in Jalingo LGA, Taraba State. Limitations may include challenges in accessing hunters' associations and gathering data on their interactions with formal security agencies.
